Human trafficking, also known as trafficking in persons, is a vile and pervasive criminal industry where traffickers exploit and profit from adults and children through forced labor or commercial sex. Notably, any commercial sex act involving a minor under 18 (19 in Nebraska) is considered a crime, regardless of the presence of force, fraud, or coercion. This modern form of slavery can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, race, or religious background.
The need for specialized programs and safe housing in Nebraska is immense, as the state ranks 15th in the nation for human trafficking incidence rates. Highways like Interstate 80, which runs through the heart of Nebraska, serve as main arteries for trafficking. Tragically, this vital roadway impacts lives in both major cities and small, close-knit towns along its path.
